Would it be lame to give gift certificates for places my boyfriend and I frequent on dates for xmas?

I realize the gift certificates would be really for both of us, but I’m promising my time and future dates! Also, I plan to make a creative “book” of short letters and tape the gift certificates throughout. Would a 47 year old guy like this as a gift, with some warm Wigwam socks, and a Nalgene bottle full of Power Bars? (We’re training for a half marathon).
Some additional details: We’ve been dating for 7 years, and we live 50 miles apart. Also, he’s not materialistic, and he will not discuss gift ideas with me. I have always been completely surprised, and there have been years he’s given me very expensive things, and years when it was just a few used CDs. He does not wear cologne, does not care for gadgets. He ALWAYS insists on paying for our dates, so the gift card idea was my way of footing the bill for some of our dates. Any suggestions?
