Do most stores (Barnes n Nobel and Sports Auth. specifically) let you buy gift certificates with store credit?

Im gonna return some christmas stuff tomorrow and therye probably gonna give me store credit. But because I want to order stuff online, I cant use store credit. So instead, I want to buy gift certificates with the credit (which I plant to use online).

So what im really asking is: do most stores allow you to do this?
